EURO CHAMPIONS
This is to congratulate the Champions of Europe in arrears...after they ruthlessly thrashed the Italian 4-0. They were deserved Champions, and it’s also most elating as they were my first choice winners on this blog.
They dismissed the Portuguese in the Semis after Penalty shootout. Fabregas’ well-struck penalty sent them to the final. Although Ronaldo, who may have been waiting to take the last shot -and take glory- did not get the chance, as Bruno’s missed chance left Fab with the score-and-win ball. Ronaldo got loads of sticks for not being among the first 3 persons that took the penalties. But if you ask me, he shouldn’t be blamed, as he may have worked with his intuition...who says he must have scored if he took it earlier?
KING MARIO
The Italians also sprung surprise, by sending the Germans packing on a frenzy match that ended 2-1. The Germans were strong favourites to come out of that match as winners, but like I earlier noted on this blog, the Germans are always found wanting when needed most. They usually start their tournament like a house on fire and are edged out with one bad performance. Two stunning goals form Big Mario were enough to send the Italians to the finals, although Ozil’s last minute penalty did little but reduce the tally.
The final was then set for a battle between Italy and Spain. Spain went into the match not having won the Italian in a tournament...that record was rewritten! Goals from Silva, Alba, Torres and Mata were what humiliated the Italian, in what they may regard as one of their longest nights!
HIGH FLYER
Congrats to Fernando Torres who picked up the highest goal scorer gong. Although he had three goals and an assist, and was tie on with Gomez on same record, he snatched the prize having played the fewer minutes. He was also the only person to have scored in two consecutive Euro finals!
Spain has also set the record of being the first team to have won three major trophies in a row (Euro 2008, World cup 2010, and now Euro 2012).
Iniesta also got his recognition as the best player of the tournament. Although Pirlo’s contribution was applauding, the Spaniard went home with the prize.
My take? Well deserved...if not for the likes of Messi and Ronaldo, Iniesta must have taken the Ballon d’Or.
